A Denham Court man has been convicted of impersonating a police officer after he whipped out a mate’s Australian Federal Police badge in a bid to avoid scrutiny following a boozy New Year’s Eve celebration.

About 4.25am January 1, Drew Michael Lawrence, 35, came to the attention of police when a Mitsubishi Mirage he was travelling in was pulled over in Gregory Hills.

In the hours before, Lawrence had been celebrating the New Year in style at a dress-up party with friends.

The driver of the Mirage was arrested for allegedly running a red light and when Lawrence, sitting in the rear of the car, was asked to identify himself the heavily intoxicated father-of-four said he didn’t want to.

When pressed by the police officer he said, “I can’t be here, I shouldn’t be here”.

Lawrence then continued, saying “look, is there anything we can do, I can’t be here” then partially revealed an Australian Federal Police badge from his pocket.

The badge was the property of a close friend, which had fallen into his possession during the night of celebrations.

Magistrate Ian Cheetham said Lawrence’s actions were a clear attempt to stop the police carrying out their lawful duty.

“He was clearly not wanting the officer to exercise the duties he has on behalf of the community,” Mr Cheetham said.

In an apology letter tendered to the court, the 35-year-old said he was remorseful, ashamed and embarrassed by his actions.

He also revealed he had given up the booze in the aftermath of the incident and had lost the friendship of the owner of the AFP badge.

Lawrence was convicted and placed on a Community Corrections Order for 16 months.
