IN 2011 Priscilla Ale completed a sewing course so she could help make costumes for a Polynesian dance group.
Fast forward and the fashion designer’s work has now made it onto the global stage.
Mrs Ale began E’vana Couture in Ingleburn and her designs have featured in several Australian runway shows.
But it was a dress she designed for New Zealand choreographer Parris Goebel to wear at the MTV Music Awards in 2016 which attracted global attention.
“My social media following just exploded,” Mrs Ale said.
“She’s worked with people like Justin Bieber, Jennifer Lopez and Rihanna so a lot of people were looking for my Facebook and Instagram after the show back in 2016.
“People have taken notice and I’ve done some runway shows.”
Since then Mrs Ale has been a regular on the Pacific Runway fashion scene and will have many of her items at this weekend’s Pacific Runway show at Carriageworks in Sydney.
She hopes her work will help bring her Samoan heritage, from the villages of Lepa and Vaitoloa, to the forefront of the Australian fashion industry.
“I’d like to do an Australian fashion show in the future but I don’t think I’m ready just yet,” she said.
“With my work, I’m trying to change it up a bit and make it more like what our (Samoan) fashion used to be but with a few embellishments.”
Mrs Ale’s work will be on display at Pacific Runway, showcasing Pacific Island designer talent, this weekend at Carriageworks.
