A SEA of orange shirts of various shapes and sizes signalled another successful year of the 24Hr Fight Against Macarthur at Campbelltown Athletic Track on Saturday.
Thousands of people, touched by cancer or supporting loved ones, took to the track for a 24-hour marathon walk to fundraise for local cancer services.
Local Aboriginal elder Uncle Ivan Wellington told the crowd, in his Welcome to Country address, that he himself was a cancer survivor and understood the hardships. He said all funds raised would go towards the treatment, equipment, comfort and care of the Macarthur region community.
Organising committee chairman, Cr Warren Morrison, said the event had raised $4 million in its 13 years.
“Businesses donate from the heart, not just the pocket,” he said.
Cr Morrison also paid tribute to walk founder Fred Borg, who passed away from cancer in 2016.
“This commemorative plaque … is a tribute to our local hero,” he said.
Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre director Dr Stephen Della-Fiorentina said it was a privilege to work in a community that looked after its own.
