A critical incident investigation has been launched after a man was shot by police at Campbelltown Station this afternoon after he allegedly lunged at them with a 30cm knife.
Just before 2.45pm, the man, aged in his 30s, became involved in an altercation with officers from the Public Transport Command after the officers noticed the man acting suspiciously.
Assistant Commissioner Peter Thurtell said police confronted the man who allegedly brandished a 30cm knife at them.
Police fired a taser at the man which was ineffective. The man, on a second occasion, allegedly brandished the knife at the officers and he was subsequently shot.
The shooting took place on a driveway leading to the bus interchange on Hurley St, near Campbelltown Station.
Three Ambulance crews and a medical team attended after being alerted to the incident about 2.45pm.
The man has since been taken to Liverpool Hospital with a single gun shot wound to the stomach.
A number of school students and commuters walked past the crime scene following the incident.
“This is the time buses arrive to pick up school kids to take them home,” said a woman who declined to give her name.
“You can see how many school kids there are now. Usually it’s very busy here at this time of the afternoon.”
A black sports bag and first aid kit were left on the driveway near the shooting, with a bullet casing located near a fluoro orange witches hat.
A crime scene has been established and police encourage members of the public to avoid the area as the scene is examined.
Police are not searching for anyone else in relation to the incident.
No police or other members of the public were injured.
