A family birthday outing with 17 loved ones has ended in a horrific fashion with a three-year-old boy and his dad rushed to hospital with serious burns to their face and arms.
Sasuki Tepanyaki Bar in Narellan was hosting the birthday lunch, understood to have been for a grandmother, when a trainee chef sprayed an alcohol-based cooking accelerant into the flames as part of a fire show about 12.30pm on Sunday.
The flames spurted out onto the boy and his 34-year-old father causing serious burns with the pair rushed to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Concord Hospital respectively.
A distraught restaurant owner Jim Chohaili told the Macarthur Chronicle he had been in contact with the young boy’s uncle and would offer any support he can.
“Whatever they need, we are here for them,” he said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them all.”
Mr Chohaili said the trainee chef involved in the incident had been left shaken and would be offered counselling support.
The fire component of the Teppanyaki show has been immediately banned.
The restaurant opened in late 2016 to much fanfare in the region and promised to be “like nothing the area’s had before”.
Police attended the incident and have notified SafeWork NSW.
The boy remains in The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a serious but stable condition.
