Narellan Vale man ordered off the booze after drunken police pursuit
Narellan Vale builder and father-of-three Cory David Shields has been convicted after he led police on a boozy 2.9km pursuit through the suburban streets of Mt Annan.
A Narellan Vale man has been ordered off the booze and to complete 250 hours community service after he led police on a drunken pursuit through the suburban streets of Mt Annan earlier this year.
Father of three Cory David Shields, 35, was driving a Toyota LandCruiser along Waterworth Dr, Mt Annan about 11.25pm on February 26 when he was identified by police for a random breath test.
The builder failed to stop and continued driving, ignoring the flashing lights, horn and high beam of the pursuing police car.
After arriving at his Throsby St home and ending the 2.9km pursuit, a shirtless Shields refused to respond to the police officers, telling them “it’s all good chief”.
The police facts state he was verbally aggressive to a female officer at the scene, was red and flushed to the face and chest, and had slurred speech.
He was later breath tested at Narellan Police Station and returned a reading of 0.127.
At Picton Local Court yesterday, Magistrate Ian Cheetham sympathised with the responding police officers who had to deal with the drunken Shields.
“The police have a difficult job,” he said. “They have a duty to carry out their role and stop people in the public interest.”
“When they have to deal with someone who is being argumentative and verbally aggressive it just makes the police officers job much harder.
“(Your behaviour) was never going to improve your situation. It was just going to make it worse.”
Shields was convicted of mid-range drink driving and failing to stop when directed.
He was placed on a two-year Community Corrections Order, abstain from alcohol and complete 250 hours community service.
