A $20 million cemetery with the capacity to house more than 27,000 burial plots could be built near rural Douglas Park.

Concept plans for the multidenominational cemetery, to be located on a 17ha site on Douglas Park Drive, were lodged by Benima Pty Ltd to Wollondilly Council in December.

The proposed cemetery would have a capacity of 27,784 single burial plots.

The cemetery would feature family vaults, a mausoleum, 200-space carpark and administration centre.

A multidenominational chapel, condolence room, Christian chapel and Islamic Representation prayer room would be located inside the administration centre.

Documents lodged to Wollondilly Council highlighted the need of a cemetery in light of the region’s projected population growth.

“It is recommended to council that the proposed development of the subject site for use as a cemetery is worthy of support as it will fulfil a community need within a precinct that is experiencing and is forecast for significant population growth,” the documents state.

A NewsLocal report in 2017 highlighted Sydney was “fast running out of burial space”, with figures indicating only 310,000 plots were available in metropolitan Sydney.

The proposed cemetery’s public entrance would be on Douglas Park Drive

The proposal is on exhibition with Wollondilly Council until February 24.
