A man could have been dead for up to two weeks before his body was discovered at a southwest Sydney apartment complex police have revealed.
Emergency services were called to an address on Middleton Rd, Leumeah, just before 2pm on Monday after a neighbour raised the alarm due to a “foul odour”.
Chief Detective Inspector Greg Inger, the Crime Manager of Campbelltown City Police Area Command, said police gained entry to the premises and found a deceased male in the unit.
“Following investigations, we have identified the deceased as 49-year-old Jamie Culgan who resided at that location,” he said.
“We are quite early in that investigation and we are still processing that crime scene.
“We have spoken to the family of Jamie and we are putting together his movements and associations.”
Inspector Inger said the cause of death had not been identified, and would not comment on what police found at the crime scene.
However he confirmed Mr Culgan could have died up to two weeks ago.
“His body was in a state of decomposition,” Inspector Inger said.
“Again the exact time and cause of death hasn’t been identified but we are seeking assistance to find out his movements in relation to the last couple of weeks.
“There are a number of people who reside in the unit complex ... there are a lot of people who have already assisted us.”
A neighbour from the apartment complex next to where Mr Culgan’s body was found came home on Monday to find police investigators swarming the area.
Talee Assoum said it was a tragedy, adding that Middleton Rd saw its fair share of criminal activity.
“When I was coming back from work on Monday there were a whole bunch of detectives outside the units and they wouldn’t let anyone in the street,” he said.
“I didn’t know the man who had died but it was very sad.
“I have lived in the area for 13 years, nearing 14 years and it‘s horrible when something like this happens, but it’s nothing new. A lot happens here on Middleton Rd.”
Mr Assoum said sometimes it‘s hard to sleep through the night due to issues on the street, adding thefts, assaults and drug crimes were common.
Inspector Inger said it was a “terrible time” for Mr Culgan‘s family and the wider community.
As investigations continue, detectives are appealing for anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage from the area, to come forward.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact officers at Campbelltown Police Station or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
