A living treasure of the Macarthur region, Harry Brierley has won a legion of adoring fans with his regular act of generosity.
Nearly every morning, the Campbelltown 90-year-old settles into ‘Harry’s Corner’, his customary seat at Leaf Cafe & Co, and pays for a random stranger’s coffee.
The father-of-three, grandfather-of-10 and great-grandfather-of-11, says it all began three years ago after enjoying Chinese with his late wife in Picton.
“I got up to pay the bill and the woman said your meal had been paid for,” he said.
“At this stage, I was an 88-year-old and nothing like that had ever happened to me before.
“I made a few inquiries and heard about the Pay it Forward system.
“I thought it was a bloody good idea because it brightened up my day.”
The 24-year army veteran said he then began paying it forward himself at his favourite cafe.
“I just thought, I might as well see if I can brighten people’s days up myself by giving them a cup of coffee,” he said.
Word of Harry’s generosity has gone viral since a post on Macarthur Square’s Facebook page, attracting 1100 shares from admirers of the friendly retiree.
As the Chronicle shared a cuppa with the 24-year army veteran, more than half a dozen shoppers said hello to the retiree as he enjoyed a breakfast with his family.
Leaf Cafe & Co owner Dan Kim said Harry just simply enjoys helping people.
“Most people who receive a coffee paid for by Harry are surprised, they are like ‘oh, who does that?’, he said.
“People always appreciate it and often take a seat with him and have a little chat.”
Harry praised the cafe’s staff, describing the business as his “second family”.
