THE Macarthur region’s business community has united in a push for rail infrastructure for the area.
Federal Urban Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher faced a barrage of questions at the launch of the Camden Region Economic Taskforce on Friday at the Camden Council administration centre at Oran Park. Greater Narellan Chamber of Commerce president Maria Sapienza asked for clarity surrounding rail infrastructure, after estimates revealed 10 million passengers were expected annually at Western Sydney Airport by 2031.
“There is no point having this beautiful airport that has 10 million people coming through, when we are still going to take just as long to get there,” she said.
Campbelltown businesswoman Anne Parnham said the “time was right” for the government to provide the essential rail infrastructure. “This is the perfect opportunity to spend some money looking into the future of the South West. We tend to be forgotten a little out here.”
Camden state Liberal MP Chris Patterson said he doesn’t hold any concerns regarding the prospect of rail. “There has been $3.6 billion spent on roads which was brought forward, including Elizabeth Drive and Northern Road upgrades, in preparation for the airport,” he said. “There isn’t a date set (for rail) and we said that.”
Mr Patterson said ensuring rail infrastructure was in place before the population boom was a priority.
Mr Fletcher had no firm timeline for the start of construction of new rail infrastructure for the Macarthur region.

A chorus of questions was asked of Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure Paul Fletcher at the launch of the Camden Region Economic Taskforce on Friday.
Revealing estimates of 10 million passengers are expected annually at Western Sydney Airport by 2031, the Greater Narellan Chamber of Commerce president Maria Sapienza asked for clarity surrounding rail infrastructure.
“There is no point having this beautiful airport that has 10 million people coming through, when we are still going to take just as long to get there,” she said.
Campbelltown businesswoman Anne Parmham said time is right for the government to provide essential infrastructure.

Mr Patterson said it’s a priority to ensure rail infrastructure is in place before the population boom.
“We are doing out utmost to put it in place (before the population). I am confident it is the priority of Federal and State governments to ensure rail is put on as fast as humanly possible.”
