Two kangaroos have been found brutally bashed and mutilated on the side of the road in Sydney’s southwest, with police now investigating the horrific scene.

Wildlife rescuers were alerted to the plight of two injured eastern grey kangaroos on Appin Rd late Wednesday night, arriving to find the native animals with their heads caved in and tails cut off and left beside them.

A joey was also discovered alive at the scene and has been taken into care.

The two female kangaroos, aged about two years old, were also alive when rescuers attended the grisly discovery and were euthanized.

Sydney Wildlife Metropolitan Service macropod co-ordinator Jamie Illistom said the scene was so horrific he was not prepared to release images.

“We see some pretty gruesome things but this was pretty bad,” he said. “It’s just horrible.

“You can’t print what I would like to see happen (to the perpetrators), if you know what I mean.

“I want to see those little bastards caught.”

The grisly discovery is not the first incident of kangaroo cruelty in Appin with wildlife rescuers attending an almost identical situation last September, in which the genitalia and tail of a male kangaroo were cut off.

In the recent discovery on Wednesday night, the two kangaroos were estimated to weigh about 25kg.

“I don’t know how they (the perpetrators) are getting their hands on them,” Mr Illistom said. “For them to manhandle a kangaroo, they have to be reasonably strong people and they are picking on animals that are pretty timid.”

Campbelltown MP and Shadow Minister for Western Sydney Greg Warren, who served in the Australian Regular Army for eight years, said it was said it was “unfathomable” to understand what inspired such cruelty on a national icon.

“What would actually motivate someone to commit, what appears to be, such a gruesome and grotesque act?” he said.

“I have full faith in our police that they will find these alleged perpetrators and will let justice take its course.

“From my own personal perspective, if they are found guilty then they should feel the full force of the law.”

The macropod co-ordinator said the first respondents to the grisly scene have been left traumatised.

Mr Illistom reminded the community to be vigilant and alert Sydney Wildlife Metropolitan Service on 9413 4300 of any injured animals sighted roadside.
