CAMPBELLTOWN police are seeking the public’s help to find an elderly good Samaritan who used his walking stick to protect an injured officer as he lay on the ground after a fight broke out in the crowd at the NRL Pacific Test at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Saturday night.

The fight, involving about 50 people, started about 9.40pm.

Police inter vened but they say a number of people continued to show aggressive behaviour.

During the incident they say a male police officer was attempting to apprehend a Rosemeadow man, 20, with capsicum spray.

The male officer received a burst of the spray to the face and fell to the ground.

The elderly man, who was using a walking stick and who was not involved in the fight, stood over the male officer to protect him and used his walking stick to wave at the people fighting around him, Campbelltown police said on their Facebook page.

Campbelltown Police crime manager Detective Inspector Greg Inger said officers were keen to find the elderly man and acknowledge his act of bravery.

“This man did a brave and selfless thing and we would like to acknowledge his actions,’’ he said.

The incident happened after police directed the Rosemeadow man to leave the stadium.

They allege the man then sprinted towards police and collided with a female officer, who fell to the ground.

The officer received bruising and soreness to the shoulder and a fracture to her toe.

Police allege the man then continued to sprint at people in the crowd including a second elderly man, who was hit in the shoulder before he fell backwards and knocked his head on a metal seat post.

The elderly man became unconscious before being treated by medical staff. He then regained consciousness, declined further treatment and left the stadium.

Det Insp Inger said police were also keen to speak to this second elderly man to make sure he was okay and to obtain a witness account from him.

While police were attempted to arrest the Rosemeadow man a second female police officer was punched, injuring her back, and a further three patrons were punched.

Other police then arrived and the Rosemeadow man was taken to Campbelltown Police Station and charged with five offences including affray and assaulting police charges.

He has been granted conditional bail to appear at Campbelltown Local Court on May 29.

In addition, a Campbelltown female teenager, 16, was charged with affray, two counts of assaulting police and resisting arrest and a Bidwill man, 21, was charged with assaulting police, following other incidents in the crowd on the night.

Anyone who knows the identity of the elderly good Samaritan is urged to phone Campbelltown police on 4620 1199.
