Hume federal Liberal MP Angus Taylor, 52, is again set to be a key minister in a Morrison Coalition government after retaining his seat.
Representing the Hume electorate since 2013, Mr Taylor yesterday received a 1.56 per cent swing towards him on a two party preferred basis.
According to the Australian Electoral Commission tally late on Saturday, Mr Taylor received 61.74 per cent of the two-candidate preferred vote, with Labor’s Aoife Champion recording 38.26 per cent.
On the first preference count, Ms Champion suffered a swing against Labor of slightly more than five per cent.
Mr Taylor’s first preference vote was down 0.32 per cent.
Independent Huw Kingston scooped up six per cent of the first preferences, with Lynda Abdo next for the United Australia Party.
The first preference vote in ballot paper order, as of about 11.30pm last night, was:
Aoife Champion (Labor) 23,174; Lynda Abdo (United Australia Party) 4085; Tanya Hargraves (Fraser Anning’s Conservative National Party) 2060; Angus Taylor (Liberal) 46,231; David Powell (The Greens) 4072; Huw Mostyn Kingston (Independent) 5236 and Ian Stanley Nebauer (Christian Democratic Party Fred Nile Group)1536.
The Hume electorate has been held by the Liberal Party since 1998.
Mr Taylor served as the Minister for Energy since last year and had previously served as the Minister for Law Enforcement and Cyber Security.
