A man who brought to life every parents worst nightmare – luring a young child inside a locked home, found with both their pants off and moments away from sexual intercourse – has been sentenced to a decade behind bars.
On a Saturday afternoon in May 2018, Christopher Irwin, 34, was tending to a suburban Macquarie Fields home when he puffed on a cigarette and watched as his seven-year-old victim, who he had spoken to a number of times before, rollerbladed in the cul-de-sac.
The man had been regularly staying overnight at the empty home, owned by his female partner, in recent weeks to “maintain” the gardens.
When the rollerblading girl was alone Irwin approached her and said “did you want to see something cool”, to which she replied “no.” Not discouraged, he grabbed her hand and led her inside his empty home.
Irwin locked the door behind him and took off victim’s jacket, unbuttoned her pants before pulling them down and taking his pants off. He later confessed he planned to have sex with her, bringing to life a scene from a fantasy story, which featured sadism, bestiality and humiliation.
Hearing a commotion outside the house, Irwin covered the girl’s mouth and told her to be quiet as her grandmother and male neighbours banged the house down, forcing an end to the terrifying ordeal.
The Macquarie Fields man ultimately let the girl escape and was then violently attacked by the girl’s heroes as police swiftly arrived and arrested him.
Irwin’s lawyer asked the court to consider this violence as an extra-curial punishment, but it was denied by Judge Andrew Colefax.
Mr Colefax said Irwin, who appeared drowsy and repeatedly rubbed his eyes as he appeared by videolink, had “low-range intelligence” and lacked insight of his horrific crimes, seen through his continued denial of his fascination for children.
At the time of the terrifying ordeal, Irwin was on the Child Protection Register after being convicted in 2014 after searching ‘kiddie rape porn’ and ‘school kid rape’ on Google.
Mr Colefax sentenced him in Campbelltown District Court to an aggregate sentence of 10 years jail for two counts of failing to comply with a reporting obligation, sexually touch child under ten and take or detain child with intent to commit a serious indictable offence.
He will be eligible for release on parole on November 30, 2026.
