Camden Council is giving residents the key to unlock the incredible stories, heritage and culture from across the Camden area.
Unlock Camden will celebrate History Week, which runs for a week from Sunday, and give residents the opportunity to learn about the heritage of the Camden district, which is as old as Australia itself.
Camden Library, in partnership with Camden Historical Society and Camden Area Family History Society, will provide a chance for the community to reflect on the history and changing landscapes of the Camden area.
Camden Mayor Theresa Fedeli said Unlock Camden was an exciting edition to the annual Camden Festival.
“There is just so much about this amazing area to learn and celebrate, which is what Camden Festival is all about,” she said.
“Throughout September, we transform the region with lots of exciting events and initiatives for all our residents to enjoy.
“We have an exciting new event this year, called Backyard Bash. It will have a backyard birthday party and summer holiday feel to it, with lots of activities for kids, a communal dinner table and live acoustic performances.”
Opportunities to explore the area’s heritage at Camden Library, as part of Unlock Camden, will include:
- A Mini Discoverers Preschool Storytime on Tuesday, 11am. This session will be based on the book Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge by Mem Fox, which will introduce young children to memory loss and ageing.
- What Once Was, a photography exhibition in the fiction section at Camden Library from Friday until next Sunday. The exhibition will explore memories and compare photos of today’s landscapes and locations with photos from the past.
- A book display, organised by the History Council NSW, with the theme ‘Memory and Landscapes’. It will have an accompanying list of books residents can get lost in.
- A talk by NSW State Archives’ archivist access and engagement officer John Cann on bushrangers on Saturday September 14 at 12.30pm.
