Wine enthusiasts may soon be able to revisit a popular Sydney winery that had closed down as new owners have proposed a plan to rejuvenate the cellar door, with a Tuscany-inspired feel.

The beloved Cogno Brothers Winery closed its doors in 2018 after more than 50 years of serving the community.

With brothers Johnny and Dino Cogno leading the way, loyal customers across the Macarthur region and interstate cherished the opportunity to replenish their shelves with the finest drop at affordable prices.

The winery first opened in 1964 and boasted a selection of 30 varieties including lambrusco, chardonnay, moscato, sauvignon and others.

The property was sold in 2021 for $5.62m to Baillie Wines. It sits on 10.27ha, with an irrigation licence plus city water, a building over more than 2000 sqm with a large brick cellar door, and production storage areas.

But now, plans submitted to Camden Council by the new owners propose to “rejuvenate” the site with the “the somewhat dilapidated built environment” transformed into a contemporary Tuscany-inspired business.

With a current cellar door approval in place, the new owners plan to freshen up the existing premises to accommodate a food and drink setting with associated site works including the provision of a children’s playground area and at grade carparking.

The works are expected to coast $140,000.

“[It] will leverage off a “rejuvenated” cellar door and provide valuable community access to a family focused food and drink offer in an iconic rural setting,” documents submitted to council state.

“In doing so it will contribute to the viability of the farm and local economy in a significant manner.”

The plans are currently on public exhibition until November 13.
