BABY formula bandits have struck in Camden with robbers stealing 21 cans worth a total of more than $747.

Camden police are investigating after two thieves wearing fluroscent jumpers stole the cans of A2 baby formula, which are valued at $35.60 each, from the Market St supermarket last Monday about 3.20pm.

Officers said the robbers picked up three to four insulated shopping bags and filled them with the tins of formula before they left without attempting to pay for them.

“A staff member recorded the numberplate of the car they left in but it is registered to a person who was in jail at the time of the offence,’’ police said.

Police are checking to find out who would have had access to the car.

Camden Police Area Command crime manager Detective Chief Inspector Jayne Doherty said baby food was often targeted as professional receivers sold it to overseas purchasers.

“The other items often targeted are razors, batteries and vitamins because of the cost and they are easy to on-sell. They often turn up at market stalls,’’ Det Chief Insp Doherty said.

“We would ask anyone with information about professional receivers of stolen property to contact CrimeStoppers.’’

The robbery comes after 35 cans of baby formula were stolen from Woolworths at Oran Park Podium in May this year.

The cans were being loaded into a car when security approached.

Three men have since been charged with larceny following the Oran Park incident.

An Eastlakes man, 45, pleaded guilty to larceny and other offences in Campbelltown Court on Friday, May 25, and has been sentenced to 21 months jail.

A Fairfield Heights man, 33, will next face court in Picton on Tuesday, July 10, while a Glenfield man, 31. will face the same court on Tuesday, July 24.

In November last year, the Macarthur Chronicle reported a man tried to steal 42 tins of baby formula and a trolley loaded with goods worth in excess of $1600 from Woolworths at Eagle Vale.

The man left the trolley of goods behind after being confronted by supermarket staff.

The theft of unusual amounts of items from Macarthur area shops was again in the spotlight when the Macarthur Chronicle reported four pairs of Bonds underpants were stolen from Coles in Picton in August last year.

A Picton woman, 47, was banned from the supermarket and also received a criminal infringement notice.

The incident followed the theft of 21 pairs of Bonds underpants from Best and Less at Narellan in July last year.

Camden police said at the time the two incidents were carried out by different women and were not linked.
