A prominent Campbelltown psychologist has fronted court for the first time after police charged him with intimidation.

Andrew Symkowiak, who works at Symkowiak & Associates - Psychology, appeared at Campbelltown Local Court on Monday.

The Woodbine resident was charged on March 15 with stalk or intimidate intending to cause fear of physical or mental harm with police alleging he intimidated a woman between 2am and 6am on March 15.

Mr Symkowiak, 43, was granted bail, and court documents stated he was a self-employed business owner with no prior criminal history.

“He has resided in the Macarthur area his entire life and has numerous community ties,” court documents said.

Lawyer John Fasha said he would be making an application for Mr Symkowiak’s charge to be dealt with under mental health legislation.

A Section 14 allows a person who is charged with a criminal offence and suffers from a mental health impairment to avoid a criminal record, and commonly comes with conditions such as undertaking a mental health treatment or support plan.

Mr Fasha indicated that if the application was refused, Mr Symkowiak would plead guilty to the offence, but no formal plea was entered.

The matter returns to Campbelltown Local Court next month.
