A man who allegedly attempted to drown a toddler in Sydney’s southwest has been remanded in custody.

Alex Clements, of Ruse, did not appear before Magistrate Shane McNulty at Campbelltown Local Court on Tuesday, where his solicitor did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.

Police allege the 24-year-old physically abused a woman, 25, and a two-year-old girl, who were known to him, on multiple occasions between January and July.

He was arrested and charged at Campbelltown Police Station.

Police were alerted to the shocking allegations last month and investigations by the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad detectives led to his arrest on Monday evening at a home near Campbelltown.

He was taken to Campbelltown Police Station and charged with attempt to drown person with intent to murder as well as six other charges — four common assault-realted and two related to the damage of property.

The matter was adjourned to September 16.
