Firefighters remain at the scene of a large factory fire in Sydney’s southwest, which forced the evacuation of workers yesterday evening.
Emergency services were called to Church Rd in Moorebank about 6.30pm on Thursday following reports of a blaze.
Fire and Rescue NSW crews arrived at the scene and found a large pile of cardboard alight at the rear of the pharmaceutical factory, which quickly spread throughout the building.
Nobody was injured.
More than 100 firefighters worked throughout the night to contain the blaze, which has been reduced to a number of localised hot spots that continue to burn this morning.
Eight fire trucks remain on scene and are working to extinguish the fire and manage any hazardous materials.
“A Hytans vehicle is in attendance and working to move as much water as possible to the firefighters who are working with handlines and ladder trucks,” a Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said.
Firefighting operations are expected to continue until tomorrow.
Holsworthy state Liberal MP Melanie Gibbons urged residents to avoid the area if possible.
“I’m relieved to say that everyone has been accounted for and there have been no serious injuries reported,” Ms Gibbons posted on Facebook.
“Huge thanks to the 120 firefighters who have been on the scene — they utilised 25 fire engines at the peak, as well as 17 pumps and cherry pickers.
“They are being well supported by our police, ambulance, council, EPA and hazmat teams.
“My heart goes out to everyone who won’t be able to turn up for work as usual at the factory tomorrow. 2020 has unfortunately added to its challenges for the many people who work there.”
