An independent candidate for the state election has put out a call to arms in a last-ditch bid to end Leppington railway station’s carparking woes.
Would-be Liverpool politician Michael Andjelkovic has organised a protest rally 30 days before the election, with commuters expected to raise banners and signs to highlight their frustration at the lack of parking around the station.
The Macarthur Chronicle first reported Leppington station’s parking nightmare in 2016, less than 18 months after it opened.
Mr Andjelkovic, who raised a petition of more than 6000 signatures calling for more parking at Leppington and Edmondson Park stations, said commuters were now beyond frustration.
“I am concerned Leppington station is being left behind,” he said.
“This has been going on for years and the issues have just been ignored.
“What needs to be done as a matter of urgency is to provide some temporary parking. We have safety issues — people forced to walk on the road because there are no footpaths.
“Buses aren’t a solution at the moment because they aren’t running frequently enough.”
Edmondson Park station, a mere 5km away, will soon triple its carparking capacity after a $40 million funding commitment from the NSW Government. Labor has confirmed it will match the funding.
Labor has promised 300 new spaces at Leppington if elected, but Mr Andjelkovic said more needed to be done.
“An extra 300 spots is honestly not enough, but at least it is something,” he said.
“There needs to be a commitment to upgrade to a multi-level carpark, just as they have done at Edmondson Park.”
The Leppington Car Parking Crisis Rally will be held from 10am on Saturday, February 23.
