Hundreds of brand new CCTV cameras could soon be rolled out across the Macarthur region under an elected NSW Liberal government, in a bid to make the streets safer than ever before.
Small businesses and community groups would be able to apply for up to $5000 in funding under the $5 million program, with Campbelltown, Camden and Wollondilly areas among the first to benefit.
Camden state Liberal candidate Peter Sidgreaves said he supported the program.
“I think it is a good initiative which will certainly reduce crime and make our streets safer,” he said.
“The fact they are being put on private premises shouldn’t raise any privacy concerns.”

Camden state Independent candidate Andrew Simpson said the program had parallels to George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984.
“This election promise is an invasion of basic workplace and community privacy rights,” he said.
“Any initiative to make the community safer should be applauded however, it seems somewhat of a bizarre choice to request these cameras to be installed in private premises.
“There should be a considered approach to ensuring that the public is kept safe, but at the same time keeping inherent privacy rights.”
NSW Police Minister Troy Grant said CCTV camera footage can be a vital source of information for NSW Police.
“This is a great initiative that will improve public safety and community confidence by cracking down on criminal and anti-social behaviour,” he said.
“It’s about putting criminals on the back foot — if they know they’re being watched, it makes them think twice about doing the wrong thing.”
