Police are calling for help from the Macarthur area community to bring down the region’s drug dealers.

Campbelltown police and Crime Stoppers today launched their Dob in a Dealer campaign to encourage locals to anonymously report drug dealers in their local area.

Crime Stoppers CEO Peter Price said a previous campaign helped boost the amount of information being passed on to police.

“We had a 134 per cent increase in information reports to police so that’s a testimony to the fact that the people of the Campbelltown area are engaging with Crime Stoppers to make their community safer,” he said.

Mr Price said people using the reporting system would have their details kept anonymous.

“We’re not interested in your name, we’re interested in your information,” he said.

“There’s no caller ID and if you send us information via e-mail it is completely encrypted so we have no way of knowing who that person is.”

Campbelltown police commander Superintendent Wayne Benson said information could help police secure a case against a suspected dealer or provide new leads.

“Statistically we’ve remained relatively even in Campbelltown in terms of some drugs and their impact,” he said.

“In terms of dealers we’re dealing with amphetamines, ice, cocaine and heroin and, of course, they all have an impact on the community.

“When we do have the information and we can act on it then we will.”

Campbelltown police crime manager Detective Inspector Greg Inger said the Campbelltown community had shown in the past it was willing to work with police.

“We have a really good community and we get a lot of good information,” he said.

“People are worried about it coming back to them and that’s the great thing about this campaign today, there is anonymity.

“It enables us to get on and do the job ... we have a really proactive command who go out there and hunt criminals.”

Inspector Inger said drug crime was a factor in other crimes.

“By attacking drug crime we stop other crimes from happening,” he said.

“People break into cars, they break into houses and they assault people because they are looking for money to pay for their drugs.

“By stopping it at that root level it stops crime generally and makes the community safer – you can see in our statistics it is generally going down and that’s because we give it that attention.”
