A Sydney airport is up for sale for first time in 46 years

An airfield located on the outskirts of Sydney, which once served as a military base during World War II, is up for sale for the first time in almost 50 years.

The Oaks Airfield was last sold in 1975 and is expected to attract international interest.

A modest airfield built during World War II and stationed on the outskirts of Sydney has entered the market for the first time in almost half a century.

The Oaks Airfield, found about 15 minutes from Camden, is one of only four privately-owned commercial airports in Sydney and will be listed by global property agent Savills in coming weeks.

Savills director of metropolitan and regional sales Nick Lower said he expected international interest for the 40ha site, describing its potential as limitless.

“It’s certainly not everyday that the opportunity to acquire an airport becomes available,” he said.

“I guess when you look at an asset of this scale and you try to understand who may buy it, it is quite an endless list.”

The site is expected to sell for more than $10 million.

Developers, land bankers and uber-rich families are expected to make a bid for the airport, which has the potential to transform into a tourist hub for the rural village of The Oaks.

Mr Lower said hotels, homes or shopping centres could be developed which would support the refurbishment of the dusty airport, the current home of the volunteer-run Sydney Recreational Flying Club.

“(The owner) would love to see that current airstrip transform itself into something a little more commercial or more sophisticated,” he said.

“I certainly understand that (Wollondilly) Council like the idea of the airport being there and some of the commerce it could create.”

The current owner, 72-year-old flight engineer Grahame Onus, purchased the site in 1975, 33 years after it was constructed by the Royal Australian Air Force and US military as a military base during World War II.

The aerodrome could mirror the success story of Essendon Fields in Victoria says Mr Lower, which was a blink away from closing down 20 years ago but is now a successful business park, complete with a DFO outlet, hotel and more.

The site, which is a short trip from the proposed Outer Sydney Orbital, is expected to sell for more than $10 million.
