From leaping around on the ground to twisting and tucking 10m above the water, Sarah Malcolm has made a successful transition from gymnastics to diving.
The 12-year-old from Randwick took up the sport of diving just three years ago and she is already making a splash.
Sarah competed at the NSW Primary School Sports Association diving championships last month and was named female diver of the meet, winning gold in the springboard 12 years and gold in the platform open. She has also been selected for the NSW team to compete at the national SSA 10-19 years diving championships in Ringwood, Victoria in July.
Sarah is our latest nominee for Junior Sports Star Individual in the Local Sports Stars Awards.
Sarah said she did gymnastics at age eight but switched to diving because all her schoolmates took it up. “I just like the feeling of you’re flying and spinning in the air,” Sarah said.
The youngster belongs to Diving NSW and trains under coach Emma Lynch at Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre, putting in some big hours. “I train eight times a week about 25 hours in total before and after school and on weekends.”
Sarah’s biggest success so far has been a gold medal for 3m springboard at the Pacific School Games in 2017.
Her heroes include Melissa Wu and Matt Mitcham and she hopes to one day represent Australia at the Olympics.
The Local Sports Stars Awards are open to athletes 18 and under in Junior Sports Star Individual, Inspiration and Team of Excellence. There is also a Service to Sport Category. The awards are supported by Bankstown Sports and Featherdale Wildlife Park.
