EARLWOOD’S little champion archer Giorgio Vasiliades just keep getting better as he zeros in for his ambition of making the Olympics like his grandfather, also named Giorgio Vasiliades, a champion weightlifter.

Mr Vasiliades, who finished sixth at the 1972 Munich Olympics and won two Commonwealth Games gold medals, is a member of Australian Weightlifting Hall of Fame and provides great support to his grandson.

“I am close to my grandad and he takes me for training if my parents are unable to because our family is a very sports-oriented one,” said Georgio, who turns 14 on August 28.

Giorgio, trains up to 10 hours training each week under head coach Ricci Cheah at the Sydney Olympic Park archery range.

He also builds up his strength at his uncle’s gym at Earlwood.

The Tempe High School student took to archery five years ago after his dad Anthony took to the range and Georgio never looked back.

The 13-year-old has already won the Australian title and scooped up golds, silvers and bronzes in 2018 at the trans-Tasman event, Oceania championships and NSW under-15 championships.

“I lost a few medals at the Trans Tasman by the narrowest of margins and while it is disappointing, I know I have to lose some,” Georgia said.

“Overall I am happy with my performances and now my next goal is to make it to the Australian team for the 2019 World Junior Championships in Spain.

“I am grateful to my school for giving me the time to train and compete.”
