CARLO Cassar wants to be the next and if the cards fall his way, he just could be like his rugby league hero.
The 17-year-old dynamo from Wetherill Park is doing the hard yards on and off the field, playing for the Parramatta Eels and Wentworthville Magpies.
This week’s nominee for the Local Sports Star Award has also begun a building apprenticeship which sees him awake at 4.30am for a gym session before going to work.
After he clocks off work, Carlo heads off to the training field either with the Eels or Magpies, where his work ethic is admired.
“Paul Gallen (the Cronulla Sharks star) is my idol and I want to be like him on the field,” Carlo said.
“I have been playing with the Magpies and Eels for the past thee seasons in different positions.
“I play where ever the coaches put me.
“The Magpies are doing very well in Division One of the Parramatta league.”
Carlo’s upper body strength gives him an edge on the field according to some coaches.
Carlo, who left Bonnyrigg’s Freeman Catholic College to take up the apprenticeship, has benefited a lot from his stint with Western Sydney Academy of Sport after winning a scholarship, which was supported by Fairfield Council.
His progress up the rungs has been noticed by the Maltese rugby league association which has picked him for their under-18 internationals for the past two years.
Because of his Maltese connections, Carlo — who also has Italian blood — could play for Australia or Malta.
