With four players in their first year of rugby union, Penrith’s under-12 team were hardly expected to win a game at the state championships, let alone take out the whole thing.

But nobody told the players that.

Against some incredibly tough and much more experienced opposition, Penrith defied all odds as they dropped just one game on the way to claiming a miraculous state title.

One of the players in the middle of their debut rugby union season is Kurt Waters, who was named player’s player for the tournament.

“No-one expected them to take it out but they did it quite easily to be honest,” Kurt’s Dad Allan said.

“For them to go down there and perform the way they did was really something special. A big thanks also goes to Loyals for sponsoring Penrith Rugby Union. It’s companies like them that allow the boys to play the game they love.”

Penrith is a Penrith Press Team of Excellence nominee for the 2019 Local Sports Stars competition.

The awards recognise and reward talented athletes across a wide range of sports, as well as the hardworking volunteers who keep associations running each weekend.
