Local Sports Star nominee Leon Ngo is aiming for the stars in flying disc
Leon Ngo is aiming for the stars, training over long hours to realise his dream of representing Australia in flying disc.
Leon Ngo spends long hours training after school to perfect his techniques with the flying disc.
The 13-year-old from Green Valley plays for South West Ultimate as a receiver, taking up the non-contact team sport of Ultimate when he saw others competing in it.
“I got involved with the sport as soon as I joined high school. I saw many people playing and thought it was fun,” he said.
Despite being relatively new to the sport, the teenager has already competed at its highest levels.
Most recently, Leon competed at the Australian Youth Ultimate Championships, placing second.
It’s added fuel to his dream of being selected for the Australian under-20 Ultimate team Thunder.
With that goal in mind, he trains long hours in the cold — but it’s all worth it, with the hard work already paying off.
The teen said he treasured the friendships and connections he’s made through the sport, which has been recognised by the International Olympic Committee.
The toughest challenge has been overcoming his fear of failure, he said, but having the support of his parents and friends was invaluable.
Leon has been nominated for a Local Sports Star award in the Junior Sports Star Individual category. The award recognises the dedication and achievements of athletes aged 18 and under.
There are four categories in the Local Sports Stars competition, which is sponsored by Featherdale Wildlife Park and Bankstown Sports. Nominate at localsportsstars.com.au.
