AS an athlete and netballer, Chanelle Odendaal is right on top of her games while also pursuing a promising career as a singer.

The 13-year-old Beaumont Hills local has risen dramatically in athletics ranks since taking to the sport seriously just a year ago, qualifying for the NSW Combined High Schools Championships in four events: 100m, 4x100m relay, 800m and high jump, after starring at the Sydney West Schools Athletics Championships.

Chandelle, this week’s nominee for the Local Sports Star Awards, is also tops in netball and football, at Rouse Hill Rams, not to mention her new career as a netball umpire.

“My whole family has always been into sport, with my brothers into soccer, cricket and rugby,” the Rouse Hill High School student said.

“My mum did ballet, tennis and horse back riding and my dad did cricket, rugby union, soccer, athletics, and tennis.

”My favourite athletics event would be hurdles as I just enjoy it and look forward to doing this event more than any of my other events.

“At the beginning of each race for this event, I am always excited and ready to run.”

Chanelle won the Sportswoman of the Year prize at the Rams last year, after setting personal bests regularly and club records, in addition to qualifying for the NSW State Championships.

“My long term goal is to leave my mark in all the areas that I participate in, not in only sport but art, singing, leadership and academics,” Chanelle said.

“I enjoy riding horses, playing golf, basketball and tennis.

“There’s nothing better than a good book in my spare time, grabbing my sketch pad to draw my thoughts or capturing moments on my camera.

“I’ve sung in a number of eisteddfods and will get the opportunity to sing with my choir in the Sydney Opera House at the end of the year.

“I’ve also completed my first course and received a certificate from my modelling agency Bettina.

“I’m honoured to be chosen by my peers as a Year 7 leader and I will continue to dedicate myself to my school with the leadership capacity in the hopes of fulfilling my childhood dream of being school captain.”
