When 15-year-old Jordan Hancock tried out for the Under 19 NSW Combined High School volleyball team earlier this year, she didn’t mind if she wasn’t picked.
She just wanted to enjoy the experience.
“I thought it was ok if I didn’t make it because I’d still have plenty of years left to make the team,” said Jordan.
So it naturally came as quite a shock when she heard her name called.
“I really didn’t think I would make it so I was definitely surprised. Especially because I got called out last.”
Jordan will travel to Tahiti in July to represent her state at the elite Oceania Under 19s Volleyball Competition.
For this achievement, she has been nominated for NewsLocal’s Junior Sports Star-Individual award.
Despite her tremendous success in the sport, the Ryde Secondary College student says it didn’t exactly come to her naturally.
“Not really. It started out as just a choice for school sport.
“The volleyball coach saw us playing and asked us to come to training and I ended up really liking it.
“I was very uncoordinated at the beginning but I kept playing and got a lot better.”
Making the team was just the beginning for the defensive star however.
“When training starts I’ll be doing around 12 hours of training and playing a week,” Jordan said.
“You always hope to do well in a competition like this and I think we’ve got a pretty strong chance with this team.”
