Ian Thorpe’s incredible record as a young swimmer is under threat with hot shots such as Marshall Lynch hitting the water.
The Padstow 11-year-old is making a splash in the swimming world, breaking records set by Thorpe 25 years ago.
They’re not Olympic times yet, but district age records Marshall broke at the zone championships in Birrong.
Marshall bettered Thorpe’s 1992 50m breaststroke record by 0.36 seconds, with a time of 42.32.
Thorpe even congratulated the young swimmer on his win after Marshall’s coach, Alex Clarke from Harlee Elite in Revesby and Roselands, put the achievement up on Instagram.
Marshall wrote back to his swimming idol: “Thanks real Ian Thorpe – I’m such a big fan. You’re the best. Guess who going to be just like you – this guy”.
Clarke said after only being a part of Harlee Elite for one year, Marshall had gone from strength to strength and was a great “squad person with a “stack of energy”.
“He’s the first one to say hi in the morning to everyone at training and the first one to help anyone out that’s having a bit of trouble,” Clarke said.
“He’s an enthusiastic and dedicated young swimmer who has a bright future in the sport.”
Marshall might not be the only Lynch to look out for.
His twin sister, Dakota, and nine-year-old twin siblings, Cali and Cheyenne, were all selected for the NSW PSSA championships, to be held at Homebush in April.
Marshall was selected for five events – a result he was pretty stoked about.
“I can’t believe I made it in all of those strokes,” Marshall said.
“I’ve worked hard with Alex to get those results – he’s the best.”
Marshall is this week’s Local Sports Star nomination, in the category of Junior Sports Star Individual.
The program has five categories – Junior Sports Star Individual, Junior Sports Stars Team, Young Sporting Spirit Individual, Young Sporting Spirit Team, and Service to Sport.
