While swimming is predominantly regarded as an individual sport, coach Aaron Cleland has transformed Blacktown Masters Swimming Club with his team-based approach.
The 44-year-old joined the club in 2017 and immediately had an impact as both a swimmer and coach, leading Blacktown in successful Pan Pacific, national and state championship campaigns.
“Aaron thrives on building others’ strengths,” club member Alex Hardy said.
“Aaron has volunteer- coached our team relentlessly, programming and race prepping for an array of athletes, from the weekend warriors to the serious competitors. All swimmers are welcomed regardless of ability, to help build a culture of encouragement and participation.
“He works tirelessly on improving fitness levels and technique among all in our squad. No matter if it’s nationals or a team relay event, Aaron provides encouragement, leadership and unwavering support.”
Cleland returned to the pool after a 20-year break.
“Aaron chooses to coach because he enjoys the challenge of helping others achieve their goals and ambitions and ultimately watching us succeed,” Hardy said.
“His future direction is to give back to a sport that gave him so much in his younger years by helping others better themselves.”
Cleland is a Blacktown Advocate Service to Sport nominee for this year’s Local Sports Stars competition, which is proudly sponsored by Featherdale Wildlife Park and Bankstown Sports.
