It takes a lot to be able to stand out from a crowd of 1000 of the country’s top young gymnasts.
Glenwood 12-year-old Tru Hagens put on a head-turning display at the 2019 Australian Gymnastics Championships, dominating in four separate disciplines to be crowned Level 7 under-13 overall national champion.
The NSW High Performance Centre representative was almost flawless throughout the competition as he claimed gold medals in floor, pommel horse, parallel bars and all around.
Tru also finished second in high bar.
His effort also helped team NSW claim more medals than any other state.
Tru’s journey to becoming a national gymnastics champion began when his parents enrolled him into a class as an energetic six-year-old.
“When I was little I was always wanting to do tricks on the trampoline and was very hyperactive,” Tru said.
“So my parents knew gymnastics would be a sport I would love and they were right.”
Tru said the thing he enjoys the most about gymnastics is how it makes him feel “unique.”

“I love getting skills and tricks that not everyday people can do,” he said.
“I also love how competitive it is as it challenges me and makes training long hours so worth it.
“I would love to compete for my country at the Olympic Games when I’m older. Training within the NSW High Performance Centre means that I am on the right path to get there.”
Tru is this week’s Blacktown Advocate nominee for the 2019 Local Sports Stars competition, which is proudly sponsored by Featherdale Wildlife Park and Bankstown Sports.
