Police are searching for the missing driver of a car that rolled into an embankment and became wedged against a freight train carriage in Sydney’s south west.

NSW Police and NSW Fire and Rescue were called to a two-car crash at 5.30am on the Hume Highway near Waterloo at Greenacre after a white Mitsubishi SUV had collided with the rear of a Honda SUV.

It comes as emergency services reel after a horror start to the Easter long weekend road campaign, in which six people have died.

The Mitsubishi SUV slid down an embankment before coming to rest on its roof against a freight train carriage within the rail corridor, police said.

“The driver of the SUV was able to get out by himself, with police told the man then became involved in a physical altercation with an unknown third party,” NSW Police said.

The driver then left the scene before emergency services arrived and inquiries are underway to identify the driver and to ensure he had not been injured.

NSW Police said officers had spoken to someone later in the day and are looking to take legal action.

The driver of the other Honda SUV, a 68-year-old female, was assessed by Ambulance at the scene and conveyed to hospital for treatment.

The vehicle was removed from the rail corridor by Fire and Rescue crews and winched back to the roadway before being loaded onto a tow truck.

NSW Fire and Rescue Superintendent Conrad Walsh said two fire trucks and eight firefighters deployed but the nature of the crash made the rescue more “complicated”.

“When a car is over an embankment it’s a bit more complicated than a head-on or side on collision, it would involved more attention because of where the cars are located,” he said.

Superintendent Walsh confirmed both vehicles have been recovered and reminded Australians to “drive safely over Easter.”
