A Mt Pritchard man charged over an early morning apartment blaze, which landed two police officers in hospital, will under go a court-ordered mental health assessment.
Christopher Debattista, 34, faced Fairfield Local Court via video link on Wednesday afternoon, when it heard he would undergo a mental health assessment.
Debattista was charged with damage property by fire or explosion after he allegedly sparked a unit fire in his home suburb earlier on Wednesday morning, but he did not enter a plea.
He was remanded in custody, and a date for his next court appearance has not yet been set.
Emergency services were called to a property on Drysdale Rd about 4.40am on Wednesday to reports of a unit on fire.
A spokesman from Fire and Rescue NSW said six fire trucks and 22 firefighters responded, with surrounding units evacuated while the fire was extinguished.
Debattista was arrested at the scene and taken to Fairfield Police Station, where he was later charged and denied police bail.
A NSW Ambulance spokesman said while no one else was injured in the blaze on Wednesday, two police officers were taken to Liverpool Hospital for smoke inhalation.
