NSW Government commits $40m for parking at Edmondson Park
An additional 700 carparking spaces will be created at Edmondson Park railway station, thanks to Premier Gladys Berejiklian.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian has announced an additional 700 carparking spaces at Edmondson Park railway station, tripling its capacity.
Ms Berejiklian and Holsworthy state Liberal MP Melanie Gibbons announced the $40 million investment, which will take the number of commuter parking spots to 1100.
Ms Gibbons said there were plans for a multistorey car park and the existing car park will also be reconfigured to provide more spaces.
Final planning work will start in the next few months, including a period of community consultation.
Construction is expected to start this year, with the project to be completed by mid-2020.
Labor has confirmed it will match the State Government’s commitment to provide more parking at Edmondson Park station, where commuters are forced to park in ‘no parking’ zones and on pavements and nature strips due to a lack of spaces.
Ms Berejiklian said southwest Sydney residents were “speaking with their cars and their feet”.
“They want to use public transport. That’s why we’re providing more services,” she said.
“We’re all about planning for the future of this area.
“They can trust us on this because we built the rail line, we built the car park, which nobody else could. The previous government promised it, they never did it and now we’ve got $40 million to go from 400 spaces to over 1100 spaces.”
Community campaigner Michael Andjelkovic welcomed the announcement.
The Prestons resident launched a campaign last year to lobby for a multistorey car park at Edmondson Park and Leppington stations.
“I’m very pleased that it’s happened after over 10 months of lobbying.
“I’m glad to see that the Premier has finally woken up to the fact that commuters here in the southwest need extra infrastructure.”
