Residents are rejoicing after a proposal for a motor oils warehouse in Horningsea Park was last week withdrawn.

A community campaign opposing the proposal was launched last year after Nulon applied to the State Government to move its operations from Moorebank to the Bringelly Road Business Hub.

Nulon had proposed to store bulk fluids, including combustible liquids and aerosols, at the warehouse, where they would be blended and packaged to then be distributed by truck.

Residents opposed the project based on concerns about the risks to families in the area, as well as traffic, noise and environmental impacts.

Nulon has withdrawn its proposal and a facility for the storage, cutting and distribution of structural steel has instead been proposed for the site.

Submissions for the amended application are open until February 15.

Liverpool state Labor MP Paul Lynch, who supported the campaign, said residents should be congratulated on their efforts.

“The proposal for an oil manufacturing facility was completely the wrong development for this location,” he said.

“I have no doubt that the applicant’s decision not to pursue this proposal results from the community campaign against it.”

The Leader has made calls to Nulon, with no response at the time of writing.

A resident spokeswoman said the community was “stoked”.

“It was a hard fight for all of us … it was the right thing to do,” she said.

Liverpool councillor Nathan Hagarty said it was “an absolutely fantastic result” for the community.

“All too often in NSW, local communities are locked out of the planning process or simply ignored and pushed aside in favour of developers, big business and vested interests.

“This result was due to the hard work of residents who got together, spoke up and got active.” He said the proposed facility was “simply unacceptable so close to a residential suburb”.

“The blending of oils and the mass storage of aerosols is dangerous and no amount of checks and balances can ever completely remove the risk of human error.”
