Residents of Middleton Grange say they live in the “forgotten suburb” and now, with a proposal to build 912 apartment units in the town centre, they want their voices heard.
More than 250 residents attended a community meeting on Saturday to oppose the planning proposal, which seeks to increase the number of approved residential apartments in the town centre from 176 to 912.
It also proposes a large shopping centre at the site, owned by private developer Manta Pty Ltd.
A resident spokeswoman said there was “deep concern” among the community about the size and scale of the proposal.
“We know there is a need for community facilities and we definitely need a community centre. What we don’t want is a district town centre,” she said.
A petition has now been launched to oppose the plans.
The spokeswoman said residents were worried it would no longer remain a family area if the proposal was approved.
Liverpool councillor Nathan Hagarty, who also attended the meeting, said residents’ voices needed to be heard.
“I understand that the developer obviously wants to make a return on his investment. I do think, though, the number of apartments is excessive,” he said.
“Whether it’s Middleton Grange, Edmondson Park, Chipping Norton, Holsworthy — (residents are) very clear they’re opposed to overdevelopment.”
A community forum will be held on September 17.
