Liverpool’s city centre will be at the heart of a thriving 18-hour economy, with Planning Minister Anthony Roberts today announcing 25 hectares will be rezoned to attract more businesses and residents.
The rezoning is expected to revitalise the CBD by allowing the construction of mixed-use buildings incorporating commercial and residential purposes.
This could potentially include new cafes, bars and restaurants, retail, office space and residential units.
Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said this was “the most significant leap forward for Liverpool” since the city was first designed and the Hoddle Grid was laid down in 1827.
The Hoddle Grid refers to a grid layout conceived by surveyor Robert Hoddle, which also characterises the Melbourne CBD.
Cr Waller said the development of Western Sydney Airport had thrust Liverpool into the spotlight. “In the past 18 months, council officers have spoken to more than 10 developers about projects worth up to $1 billion,” she said.
The amendment to the Liverpool Local Environmental Plan 2008 will ensure a mix of uses in every multistorey building, she said.
“When there is more demand for homes they will be able to increase the number of floors taken up by residential; if the interest is in office space, they will be able to respond to that as well.”
