The ruins of a Lurnea supermarket damaged by fire in 2014 have been removed to make way for a five-storey mixed use development.
Works have begun on the project, which has an estimated price tag of $3 million, according to a development application lodged with Liverpool Council in 2015 and approved a year later.
A construction certificate, approved by a private certifier, was recently submitted with Liverpool Council; the final step before construction could begin on the project.
A five-storey building with basement parking will be constructed at 71 Hill Rd, with retail premises at ground level and 23 residential apartments on the upper levels.
Plans by Liverpool Council are also underway to redevelop Phillips Park, opposite the development, which will include a new community hub similar to Carnes Hill Community and Recreation Precinct.
Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said it was “timely” to look at new housing stock in suburbs such as Lurnea, which predominantly have older stock.
She said the development would help renew the area and hopes it will also provide affordable homes.
“It’ll bring in a new design and it’ll bring in new housing stock,” Cr Waller said.
“It’s more in keeping with the residential area than some of the decisions that have been made in other suburbs which I’m genuinely concerned about,” she said, pointing to suburbs such as Miller.
Cr Waller emphasised the importance of good design in new developments.
“I think we have to be careful that we make sure that there’s good design and that our roads can cope with the increase of population.
“We need to make sure that we’re not making things worse for current residents and I think that this particular one … has been thought through.”
