A 20-year-old man on parole has been charged with four offences after police allege they found a gun, knife and knuckle duster in his possession.

Mhayman Kamil appeared in Liverpool Local Court on Monday, March 9 after he spent the night in custody after police charged him the day before.

Officers were responding to a call about men “acting suspiciously” when they pulled the Heckenberg’s Honda Accord over at Charles St on Sunday.

A search of the car allegedly uncovered a self-loading replica pistol, a knife and gold-coloured knuckle dusters.

Kamil was charged with possessing an unauthorised pistol, not keeping a firearm safely, possessing a prohibited weapon, and having custody of a knife in a public place.

As his father and brother watched on from the gallery, Kamil’s representative explained why his client should be released on bail.

“On the facts I concede it seems to be a strong prosecution case,” Hikmat Al Malliki said, a defence lawyer from Criminal Law Group.

“(Kamil) was very upfront with police, he didn’t need to disclose (the replica firearm).

“With respect to the knives … he’s employed as a factory/forklift driver and those knives are part of his everyday employment.”

There was no mention of the knuckle dusters during the proceeding.

Mr Al Malliki laid out the conditions for bail. He said Kamil would be on house arrest, report daily to Liverpool Police Station, surrender his passport and have a $5000 surety posted by his father.

Magistrate Imam Abdul-Karim interjected - ahead of the prosecution - to point out Kamil was already serving a sentence in the community known as an intensive corrections order.

“I cannot see cause is shown despite your strongest effort,” Mr Abdul-Karim said.

“It cannot be said the case against him is a weak case.

“I’m not minded to grant bail.”

Bail was refused and Kamil is due to appear in Liverpool Local Court over audio-visual link on March 30.
