Liverpool city will be transformed into the economic and medical jobs hub of Sydney’s south west off the back of the $740 million redevelopment of Liverpool Hospital.

Plans reveal a major new clinical building and a private hospital could be at the centre of the future Liverpool Innovation Precinct, due for completion in 2026.

Precinct chair David Borger said the strategy declared Liverpool “open for business”.

“Liverpool has one of the country’s largest hospitals and a major employer right in the heart of its CBD,” he said.

“In recent years, we have seen a migration of major health institutions moving into Liverpool to take advantage of the prime position next to retail, residential and a major transport hub.

“It also has a number of public and private schools, a medical research institute and a growing university and TAFE offering that can all be integrated into a dynamic health, education, research and employment precinct for Sydney’s southwest.”

The project paves the way for major improvements to the city’s current infrastructure, including transforming Elizabeth St into a major public boulevarde.

It proposes a new bridge “at high level” to connect the Liverpool Hospital campus with the groundbreaking Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research on Goulburn St.

A previously announced education, research and technology hub would be integrated with the Ingham Institute.

The official Land Use Analysis and Precinct Strategy also proposes the closure of Campbell St to public vehicles and talks up the potential for Sydney South West Private Hospital “to expand onto adjacent sites”.

The existing TAFE NSW site on College St is floated as the ideal location to accommodate a new private hospital development.

The strategy also proposes to merge the grounds of Liverpool Boys and Liverpool Girls high schools to “allow for better utilisation of land and open space”.

The strategy was released as work gets underway to create the world-leading health, education and research hub — the Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct — as part of the $740 million redevelopment of Liverpool Hospital.
