Girl, 7, bans birthday presents to raise money for cancer therapy centre

There is no bond like that of a grandad and grandchild. In the Stares-Turner household, it is even tighter. You won’t believe what seven-year-old Lucy did to help her grandad out.

LUCY Stares has watched grandad Trevor Turner go through chemotherapy and radiotherapy for cancer in his oesophagus. The two generations live together, so the seven-year-old has seen her grandad go through his treatment at a more microscopic level.

While he’s not out of the woods just yet, the youngster took it upon herself to cancel presents for her birthday, instead inviting everyone to her party, asking for donations to the Liverpool Hospital cancer therapy centre, where Mr Turner is receiving his treatment.

Mum Kate Stares said Lucy, 7, was oblivious at the impact of her decision.

“My dad (Trevor) read the letter she sent out to everyone telling them she had enough toys and wanted them to donate to the centre,” she said.

“He tells her that one day she’ll understand how she changed lives with this action.

“He’s so chuffed with what she’s done and has shown all his friends the letter.”

The Minto youngster wanted to raise $100. Her loved ones ending up handing over a total of $940. Some of the children even donated their pocket money.

Lucy was able to pick what the money is spent on — choosing iPads for the cancer patients.

“Not once did she question her decision. We’re all very proud.”

The youngster still scored a few presents from family, who decided to donate and buy her a gift.

Lucy’s dad Daniel participated in Dry July, which opened up the conversation for Lucy to ask what she could do to help.

Off her on back, she wrote the letter and then showed her parents.

“It’s been tough seeing her launch herself at him after school and him wince because of the pain from his treatment.
