The family of a young man killed in a devastating car and bike crash in southwest Sydney has established a charity in his honour, with a community left grief-stricken by his death.
Ekrem Mustafa Tekin, 26, was riding his motorcycle along the Hume Highway near Casula on March 19 when he was struck by a vehicle, leaving him critically injured on the road.
Police will allege Mr Tekin was hit by a van before the driver allegedly left the scene.
Despite emergency services’ best efforts Mr Tekin could not be revived and tragically died at the scene just after 3.45pm.
Liverpool police assisted by Crash Investigation Unit officers established a crime scene to investigate the incident, and following police inquiries, a 32-year-old man drove back to the scene of the crash in a van.
The driver was taken to Liverpool Hospital for mandatory testing before later being transported to Liverpool police station, where he was charged with negligent driving occasioning death and failing to stop and render assistance after an impact causing death.
The van driver was released on conditional bail to appear before Liverpool Local Court in April.
News of Mr Tekin’s passing was shared throughout the Turkish community, with hundreds of messages of support and prayers flooding social media.
His former professor Abu Umar Faruq Ahmad and his high school, Sule-Amity College in Prestons also shared tributes to honour his memory.
“It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of our dear brother, Ekrem Tekin, a 2015 graduate of Amity College,” the Sule-Amity Graduates Association wrote.
“Our hearts are heavy, and our prayers are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.”
They also announced a charity in Mr Tekin’s name, established by his family to honour his memory and continue his legacy.
The funds will go towards building wells in Africa and Pakistan, constructing a local mosque, and funding Islamic education in those communities.
“During these final ten nights of Ramadan, let us keep Ekrem and his family in our prayers. May Allah grant him forgiveness”, the post continued.
Auburn FC also paid tribute in recognition of his father’s grief, who is a committee member of the football club.
“It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of the passing of our Committee Member Murat Tekin’s son Ekrem Tekin, who died in an (sic) fatal accident few days ago … May Allah grant him the highest rank in His Jannah.”
Ekrem Tekin was laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial park last weekend, with a prayer service carried out at Auburn Gallipoli Mosque the same day.
