Locals have described hearing skid noises moments before a car crashed into a tree, claiming the life of a teenager in Sydney’s southwest.
Emergency services were called to Hoxton Park Rd, Hoxton Park, around 8.30pm to reports of a car colliding with a tree.
They arrived to find a black Subaru sedan had left the road and struck a tree.
The front passenger of the car, a 16-year-old boy, died at the scene despite the best efforts of emergency services.
He is yet to be formally identified.
The driver of the car, believed to be 19, was treated at the scene and taken to hospital, along with another 16-year-old boy who suffered minor injuries.
Footage of the incident obtained by The Daily Telegraph shows a dark vehicle wrapped around the tree, surrounded by several people including police.
Witness Jayden Karananos was one of the first people on scene and told The Daily Telegraph he and others had attempted to free one of the teenagers inside.
“(We) tried to free the young boy in the passenger seat, but no matter how hard we tried to pry open the door it wouldn’t budge,” he said.
He called the confronting scene a “very sad sight”.
Resident Vinita Narayan said the crash occurred around 8.15pm and recalled hearing a “loud skid and a bang”.
She said she initially thought several cars had crashed into each other on Hoxton Park Rd, but when she looked outside she saw a car “wrapped around” the tree and around 10 people, who had also witnessed the crash, stop to try and help.
On Friday morning, all that remained of the crash were tyre marks which led onto a traffic island and the tree where the impact occurred.
A crime scene has been established and police are now investigating the circumstances of the crash.
Hoxton Park Rd was closed until early Friday morning as emergency services remained on scene.
Police urge anyone with CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage of the incident to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 18000 333 000.
