A father of three young children remains in hospital after suffering extensive injuries in a head-on collision with a truck in Sydney’s southwest, which left him in a coma for days and unable to walk.
Holsworthy electrician Glenn Williams, 30, was driving his girlfriend and kids to a family getaway on Thursday March 13, when the crash occurred and flipped his car on Appin Rd.
The accident shut down the notoriously dangerous 37km stretch of road between Campbelltown and Wollongong from 4pm that day.
The impact of the crash trapped Mr Williams inside the wreckage, while his girlfriend — who suffered a collapsed lung — managed to free the children before emergency services arrived.
The three children sustained minor cuts and bruises and were transported to Liverpool Hospital along with Mr Williams’ girlfriend. They have since been discharged.
Emergency services spent half an hour freeing Mr Williams from the wreckage, however he lost a significant amount of blood from the accident.
He suffered severe head trauma, a broken hip, a dislocated hip and a large laceration to his right forearm.
Due to the severity of his injuries, paramedics administered an emergency blood transfusion before he was flown to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition.
“He’s only just come out of the coma … still very out of it. He doesn’t remember what we tell him five minutes later,” friend Kieren Lobb said.
“He’s had surgery on his hip and arm, and doctors say he won’t be able to walk for at least five to six months.”
Mr Lobb, a friend of 20 years and co-owner of KGJ Electrical, said it was a “miracle he’s alive” after the driver’s side of the car was crushed in the accident.
He has since launched a fundraiser to support his friend, initially aiming to raise $25,000 to cover medical expenses, lost wages and support for Mr Williams’ children while he recovers.
“He’s a funny, outgoing, outgoing bloke, really hard worker,” he said.
“He worked hard, hard for his family, like, works very hard for his kids, very passionate in what he does.”
Mr Lobb said he was blown away by the support, with donations surpassing $25,000 in just two days. He said given the severity of his mate’s injuries and inability to work for the foreseeable future, the fundraising goal had been doubled to $50,000.
“We’re hoping to raise enough to pay any bills that come up and help support his kids, especially since he pays child support,” he said.
“It’s going to be a long ride … I’m thinking at least a year before he can work again.”
He said the car Mr Williams had been driving, and used for work, was written off in the crash.
“His family is doing it really tough at the moment, as you can tell,” Mr Lobb said.
