A Sydney man has been extradited from Queensland and charged with murder three years after the body of a man was found in a southwest Sydney apartment.
Stephen Alan Warne, 30, was arrested in Rockhampton, Queensland, on Wednesday and flown back to Sydney where he was charged with the murder of 49-year-old Jamie Culgan in Leumeah in March 2022.
Mr Culgan’s body was found in a Middleton Rd apartment with multiple stab wounds on March 14, 2022, after a neighbour raised the alarm by reporting a “foul odour” coming from inside the apartment.
At the time, Campbelltown Crime Manager Chief Detective Inspector Greg Inger said Mr Culgan could have died up to two weeks before he was found.
“His body was in a state of decomposition,” he said.
Police investigated Mr Culgan’s death under Strike Force Carbethon, which led to Warne’s arrest in Queensland three years later.
Warne appeared at Rockhampton Magistrates Court on Thursday where Queensland Police were granted an extradition warrant to NSW.
He was taken to Mascot Police Station and charged with murder.
He faced Downing Centre Local Court on Friday, where he did not apply for bail.
Warne was remanded in custody and is expected to return to court in May.
