2020 Shute Shield: new clubs, new players, new draw, new look

The 2020 edition of the famous Shute Shield club rugby competition is tipped to reach a new high with new teams, a new draw and a new look for the season ahead.

A new look 2020 Shute Shield kicks off from July 18 with Penrith and Newcastle part of the 13-team competition.

The Shute Shield is now a 16 week competition where the finals series will be contested by the top six teams and the season finale will be played on October 31.

The 2020 edition of the competitions marks the return of Newcastle after an absence of two decades and Penrith who have been missing since 2018.

2020 CLUBS

Penrith and Newcastle will join Shute Shield regulars Gordon, Northern Suburbs, Warringah, Manly, Eastwood, West Harbour, Western Sydney (Parramatta), Southern Districts, Sydney University, Eastern Suburbs and Randwick.

SHUTE SHIELD: The team out to surprise

DATES

The first round will be played on July 18 after the competition was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

At the end of the regular season qualifying finals will begin on October 17, followed by elimination finals on October 24 and then the grand final on October 31.

SHUTE SHIELD: Randwick on alert in opener

TV

The 2020 Shute Shield will be telecast on free-to-air television.

One match each week will be telecast live on Seven Two on Saturday afternoons along with the finals series and the grand final.

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS

Sydney University claimed back-to-back Shute Shield premierships at BankWest Stadium in the finale of last year‘s competition.

The students came from 16 points down at halftime to defeat the Warringah Rats 21-16

Penrith are making their return to the competition after they were voted out back in 2018.

Newcastle is returning after latest playing back in 1999.
