Sydney University coach Michael Hodge believes the uniqueness of his squad is one of its greatest strengths as the club prepares for the blockbuster opener of the Shute Shield.

The Students open their 2020 campaign with a Grand Final replay against the Warringah Rats at Rat Park on July 18.

“We have such a unique bunch here,” Hodge said of his charges.

“They are thespians, lawyers, builders. One guys speaks Mandarin, one guy speaks German.

“We have people working at KPMG, another is a teacher. “But they are all extremely driven and have high expectations.

“Being a uni club we attract all kinds of people from all walks of life. It makes it entertaining for sure.”

Sydney University will start the 2020 Shute Shield aiming high and for a rare piece if history.

The club has set itself the goal of a three-peat in the Shield due to kick off on July 18.

The last time this was achieved was by the club in its run of six titles between 2005 and 2010.

Prior to this Randwick achieved the feat during its six consecutive wins between 1987 and 1992.

“They are tight, it’s our aim, we won’t be looking for excuses.,” he said.

“We can’t come in as underdogs, every team will be looking at bringing their best against us.”
